Webster, The
history of Webster predates Stephen F. Austin's 1823 settlement
of the area. The Karankawa Indians survived here as primitive
hunter-gatherers, but the tribe was driven out by industrious
settlers, who established Garden Town, later called Websterville.
By the 1890s, Webster was officially the name of the town. Japanese
farmer Kiyoaki Saibara helped area residents learn to grow rice,
starting in the early 1900s. Saibara and his father Seito Saibara
influenced the Texas rice industry for several decades.
Residents of Webster consider this the best place to play,
stay, and dine while enjoying the convenience of being located
just off of Interstate 45. Serving up the region's best cuisine
and entertainment, Webster is home to more than 100 restaurants,
dozens of family amusement venues and nightlife hotspots. Boating
activities and water recreation are only a short drive away and
will provide hours of fun and relaxation. Bringing space "down
to earth" for visitors, Space Center Houston and NASA's
Johnson Space Center are just down the street and will make staying
in Webster "out of this world!"
